Unesco Natural Heritage since 1999 The forest counts 20.000 years of existence when most of the Mediterranean areas were covered in forests. Madeira is famous for hosting the best preserved Laurisilva forests covering approximately 20% of the island. Nowadays the forests are mainly located on the northern part of the island with an altitude up to 1300m and host about 130 endemic species only found in Madeira. A visit to the Protected Natural Park is undoubtedly one of the top activities to undertake in the island.
